Best Friends of Ten is a resource designed to help students become automatic in addition combinations to ten.
This is how I use this resource during my daily math warm-up:
I hang the mini posters on my math focus wall and tell the little "friend" stories over the course of a few days. I then spend about a minute each day saying a number and calling on students to tell me that number's best friend. Even my math-challenged friends pick this up quickly. I find this simple skill to be very helpful as students begin to develop number sense apply mental math to solve everything from number strings to story problems.
