Product Description
Kids love pets--that's why this is a high-interest, engaging writing prompt for 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade students! This writing prompt asks students to read paired texts about 5 different animals (cats, guinea pigs, dogs, rabbits, and geckos) and then write their opinion about which one they think would make the best pet. The texts are written in such a way that students can find 3 reasons for ANY of the pets. Students will use the text evidence to fill out the graphic organizer, which guides them to write a 3-paragraph essay. Once you have proofread their drafts, give them the customized pet-themed stationery and then grade their essays with the included rubric.

Included:
1. Text 1: A magazine article about why cats and guinea pigs make great pets.
2. Text 2: A magazine article about why dogs, rabbits, and geckos make great pets.
3. Writing Prompt & Tips: Explains the prompt and offers tips to help students do their best writing.
4. Opinion Essay Poster
5. Graphic Organizer: ORE-RE-REO style
6. Exemplar: I wrote a model essay with the opinion that cats make the best pets. Show it to students to give them an idea of what you expect. However, there are at least 3 reasons in the texts that support each of the pets.
7. Stationery: There are 6 sheets of stationery to choose from, including one of each of the 5 types of pets (cat, guinea pig, dog, rabbit, and gecko) and one page that has a border and lines only (no graphic). Let students tell you which pet they've picked, and then make copies where the front side has the graphic and the back side has the blank lines only. Their essays should fit on one sheet of paper (front-back).
8. Rubric: Based on 100 points, aligned with Common Core / TNReady Standards
