BEST SELLERS! A Living Book Report Simulation

Objectives: Students will:
• Read a novel of their choice. (students whose novels are not chosen will read an additional novel)
• Write a working critique of the novel in order to help them prepare for their business letters and book fair presentations.
• Write professional business letters to publishing houses.
• Understand proper formatting for business letters.
• Learn how to address envelops to hold the letters they plan to send to each publishing house
• Create criteria for what makes a book a best seller.
• Generate a list of interview questions to ask fellow classmates during a publisher’s conference simulation.
• Participate in a publisher’s conference as both a literary agent and as a publishing house representative.
• Practice negotiating with their classmates in order to secure the best royalties deal.
• Complete a Book Fair Presentation including, a PowerPoint overview of the book, a movie trailer, an interactive activity for the audience, and a gimmick or give-away.
• Present formally in front of an audience of their peers.

Tentative Planning Schedule


Week 1
Students select a book to read. You might want to impose criteria for book selection for example, it must be a classic, or only American literature, or no books that have been made into movies, etc.

Week 4
Assign students the Letter to the Publisher assignment.

Week 5
Letter(s) to the Publisher are due
Publisher Conference Prep Sheet
Publishing House Interviews and Negotiations
Publishing House Agreement Signed
Best Sellers Team Contract Signed
Book Fair Presentation Rubric Overview
Students begin working on their presentation requirements

Week 6
Students continue to work on their presentation requirements
Assign Project Pitstop

Week 7
Students continue to work on their presentation requirements
Best Sellers Project Pitsop Due
Meet with each Publishing House to check progress and give feedback

Week 8
Dress Rehearsal 2 days prior to Book Fair Presentations. This leaves two class days for students to edit and revise their work for the final presentations.

Final Presentations, have students complete ballots as each Publishing House presents.

When possible, work with a partner teacher and have students present to both classes.
