If you are looking for a great way to incorporate art, math, and history/social studies all into one unit, look no further.
This is a PowerPoint presentation that includes the history of the U.S. flag, created by Betsy Ross. The 16-slide presentation includes some facts about Betsy Ross, the purpose for a flag, the components of the design, the symbolism of the flag, the geometry of the flag, imagery, and an art prompt with example.
The geometry slide features fill-in-the-blanks with math terms such as symmetry, polygon, parallel, regular shape, etc. This slide could be copied as a worksheet to check for understanding.
The art prompt includes a flag project that encourages students to practice shading values by applying various amounts of pressure; use value and lines to evoke the sense of movement and depth in a 2D work of art; blend art materials (oil pastels, colored pencils) by using a hue, white, and black to create tints and shades.
This is a great cross-curricular unit that works alongside field trips, Veteran's Day, Flag Day, Memorial Day, or Labor Day (or any time of year!).
PLEASE NOTE that the images shown are of the actual slides, but the font is different--the actual product is aesthetically nicer than the preview images.
