Better Bilinguals by Lonnie Dai Zovi - Bilinguals, emerging bilinguals, heritage speakers, native speaker or whatever the label, they still are the students who speak Spanish that they learned at home. We may chose one label but the descriptions and the needs of these students are very diverse. There are many factors that determine to what degree the student is on par with similarly aged very able students in his or his parents' home country: In my many over 30 years of teaching bilinguals, I have had students who were born in and partially schooled in a Spanish speaking country yet had very bad spelling and absolutey no idea about accents. Their vocabulary was sorely lacking, too. Some if these students resisted taking a Spanish class of any level because "Ya sé hablar todo el español. ¿ Pa' qué voy a tomar una clase?. At the same time, I have had students who have been born here, whose spelling, vocabulary and general attitude toward improvement are exemplary. In almost all cases, the bilingual or heritage learners student have had many voids that I was able to fill. The bad spelling and non-use of accents (and in many cases lower that expected Spanish vocabulary) is very common.
The sheets included in Better Bilinguals are for the whole bilingual class or for the bilingual students in a regular Spanish class. The sheets include lessons on accent use and common spelling mistakes (and in a few cases common pronunciation mistakes) and exercises and tests.
