What's the book about?
This is an eloquently written and poignant historical fiction novel with a strong female protagonist. Kids really love this story and often want to read the companion novel, Salt to the Sea, right afterward. This book will also soon be made into a movie which would be a great additional activity for the unit. The novel is about the relatively unknown facts surrounding the mass deportation and genocide of the people in Baltic states of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia perpetrated by the Soviet Union during World War II.
