-Important Information/Main Idea
-Thinking to Discuss
What is an annotation? A reading annotation is a symbol or marking used to deepen reading comprehension and analysis. Each symbol represents a different component or key concept of reading comprehension, that students will use to show their thinking while reading. This in turn, helps students reach a deeper level of engagement and understanding in the reading process.
Application: These cards can be used in guided reading or whole class instruction. After students read, they should draw one or more cards and use the card to help them speak about the text. The use of this strategy can be used for students grade K-12. Annotation cards should be introduced with the gradual release of responsibility practicing each card until it is mastered and then incorporating the use of more cards for higher level thinking.
