This workbook is designed to introduce students to the evidence that supports the big bang theory. The activity is aligned to NGSS HS-ESS1-2: “Construct an explanation of the Big Bang theory based on astronomical evidence of light spectra, motion of distant galaxies, and composition of matter in the universe.” Based on the NGSS Evidence Statements themselves, it is crafted to provide students with the content necessary to appropriately meet the standard.
While they do not actually carry out the standard in this activity (“construct an explanation”), you can purchase an organizer and rubric for the essay in my store - along with other aligned Big Bang Theory activities. The workbook assists students in developing and cementing the understandings necessary to meet the standard.
FOUR versions are included, as well as suggestions for implementation. The original is 8 pages and includes one hands-on lab/demo. The only supplies necessary for this lab are balloons, string, and rulers. The adapted version has “fill in the blank” answers that students can use to assist them. I designed it for ESL/ELL students in my classes. The “chunked” version is simply the original version with each evidence section separated onto a new page for your convenience. Lastly, an answer key provides suggested responses.
