The following twelve-page study guide film packet is used to accompany the Tim Burton-directed 2003 magical realist film "Big Fish" that stars Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Billy Crudup, and Jessica Lange. It can be used in an English or film studies classroom. The first page contains a list of cast and crew and a background and introduction on the film. The second page is a page that allows viewers to jot and take down their own notes. Pages three, four, five, six, seven, eight, and nine are comprehension questions to guide the viewer on the work's allusions, camera movement, characterization, cinematography, color symbolism, conflict, costume design, editing, figurative language, foreshadowing, inferences, irony, juxtaposition, mise en scene, mood, motifs, mood, movement, plot, point of view, set design, sound, story, subtext, suspense, symbolism, themes. The tenth and eleventh pages contains discussion questions on the work's , characterization, inferences, plot, symbolism, style, and themes. The twelfth and final page is a genre study page on magical realism and what characteristics of the genre are evident in the film based on its subject matter, style/technique, and ideologies/morals/themes.
