This is a viewing guide for the film "Big Fish," which I use as a supplemental text to begin my students' reading of "The Odyssey." The film shares many of the themes of Homer's work, including stories-within-stories, fantastical places and creatures, ideas of father/son relationships and masculinity, and more. However, your students do not have to read or have read "The Odyssey" to use this guide.
The first four pages of this document provide a question for reflection on and/or analysis of the day's viewing (presuming a four-day viewing of approximately 30 minutes per day). The final page provides discussion questions that you can use to expand student ideas and thinking with a more in-depth response. I frequently use all of the questions in the packet to have a fishbowl-style discussion on the fifth day.
