This activity is always a big hit with my students! It is a versatile activity - it is a great warm-up or opener for the first day of classes back from winter break because it gets students thinking and talking about math right away and having fun without realizing they are learning. It is also an engaging lesson opener to use for a unit on exponents.
This activity is extremely flexible - it can be worked on independently and then students can share their work with another student or the whole class or it can also be done as a group activity. It can be done as a class warm-up or it can be done as a centers activity.
It requires no prep! My students always have a great deal of fun with this activity and are always amazed by the solution. It spurs great discussion and critical thinking!
