Intermediate-Advanced Spanish students examine 3 themes of Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda: Ode to daily objects, pride of heritage/patrimony, and love/loss. Students examine Neruda's "Odas elementales", "Residencia en la tierra", and "Veinte poemas de amor y una canción desesperada". Inspired by these acclaimed works, students write 3 original poems, (1 per week), then perform 1 from memory in a culminating "Slam" competition. This comprehensive resource includes 2-page project details with rubric explanation and peer scoring criteria, peer scoring booklet with teacher's notes, official rubric, 3 HW guidelines, 3 workshop evaluation checklists. Students earn 1 project grade, 3 HW grades, 3 participation grades, extra credit opportunity. We utilize poetic devices and basic Spanish to appeal to the "common man" or common reader; we appreciate Neruda's experience by becoming poets in this healthy and creative competition! Students inspire immensely via project's engagement and enjoyment.
