This lesson titled "Farm Animals, Big Red Barn" would be a perfect first lesson on a unit for Farm Animals. The lesson uses the book, Big Red Barn, by Margaret Wise Brown to introduce the unit of Farm Animals. This lesson includes activities that will cover the following standards/objectives:
*recall information you already know, what you want to know, and what you are learning.
* listen to a story and demonstrate understanding through discussion.
*describe and illustrate the setting of the book.
* identify animals that live on a farm.
*identify beginning sounds.
There are printables for all of the activitities and the lesson includes detailed instruction. The printables include a K-W-L chart, reading response sheets for describing and illustrating the setting of the story, word cards and pictures of animals for working with beginning sounds, and a writing activity sheet for identifying animals and the sounds they make. This writing sheet would be perfect for book-making! (Red Barn, Red Barn, What do You See?)
The lesson also include a kid-friendly assessment rubric.
