Most ELA, Math and Science teachers don't have more than 100

State Tests on their shoulders - and they enjoy anywhere from 60 to

State while teaching an average of 110 students every year - and

Note: unlike lesson #37, this Lesson uses Moles and Grams to quantify atoms, molecules and mass.

Students will:

1) Analyze 6 Balanced Chemical Equations on 6 different Data Tables
2) Calculate, Determine, Draw & Write-in:
Reaction Arrows
Unique shapes around unique chemical reactant & product species
'Same' or 'Different' for Left-side & Right-side shapes
The Moles of each reactant & product chemical specie (molecule or atom coefficient)
'Same' or 'Different' for those Left-side & Right-side Coefficients (moles of molecules or atoms)
The Total number of reactant and product "players" or things (total moles of atoms or molecules)
'Same' or 'Different' for those Left-side & Right-side Total players/things (moles of atoms or molecules)
The Number of Different Reactant and Product Chemical species (different types of shapes they drew around those chemicals)
'Same' or 'Different' for those Left-side & Right-side quantities of different chemical species
The Moles of each Element's Atoms (via Coefficient x Subscript)
'Same' or 'Different' for those Left-side & Right-side moles of Element atoms
The Total moles of reactant Atoms & product Atoms
'Same' or 'Different' for those Left-side & Right-side Atom moles totals
and
The Total reactant Mass (in grams) & product Mass (in grams)
'Same' or 'Different' for those Left-side & Right-side Mass totals
3) Perform a total of 206 tasks in 6 Data Tables
4) Be compelled to present their work in a neat & orderly format
5) Discover 2 Universal Truths about The Law of Conservation of Matter and Chemical Reactions/Chemical Equations:
A) That 1 thing ALWAYS CHANGES: Chemical species or identity and
B) That 4 things ALWAYS STAY THE SAME: Elements, Number of Element Atoms, Total Atoms and Total Mass.
6) Be trained to identify and enumerate the things that Chemical Reactions and Balanced Chemical Equations Change and Conserve - methodically & systematically


Note: this Lesson is a thorough examination of just what The Law of Conservation of Matter means -and DOESN'T mean-, vis a vis Chemical Reactions & Chemical Equations. Because of the easy mantra of 'What goes in, must come out', many students lose sight of the fact that Chemical Reactions change chemicals (just not elements), and that only the atoms and mass that go in, must come out - NOT the number of Reactants equals the number of Products etc.

Thus, after this lesson, your students will discover 2 Universal Truths about The Law of Conservation of Matter and Chemical Reactions/Chemical Equations:
A) That 1 thing ALWAYS CHANGES: Chemical species or identity and
B) That 4 things ALWAYS STAY THE SAME: Elements, Number of Element Atoms, Total Atoms and Total Mass.
