Big Top Reading collection is one of a series of game cards used to reinforce phonetic skills taught in second grade. I created this game because I teach small groups of children who frequently need help with different skills. I only have students for 30 minutes, so I need things that are quick, fun and versatile. I love the adaptability of these cards. For example, after we have worked on long vowel sound for a while, I add the short vowel cards to the group of cards we are working on to make sure my readers really understand the sound. I can also combine a separate set of card that targets a need for each child in the group. I often have students use the word they read in a sentence so I can make sure the word is in their vocabulary. My students love to play this phonics game!
Cute circus graphics make the game fun for kids while special cards add interest to the game telling children to draw extra cards or pass cards to a friend. A simple font was used make the cards easy for all children to read. Some cards direct the student to get up and move around. The winner of the game is changed by a selection of card which tell the student which circus picture must be collected to win the game. The winner changes several times a game and the winner is not the player with the most cards of a particular picture rather than the greatest quantity of cards. The cards have the phonetic skill printed on the end of each card, so they are easy to sort by skill after a game.
