Big-time Readers are articles written to 3rd grade content standards, but they are written at lower reading levels. So you're struggling readers will still have reading materials that feature 3rd grade text elements including: captions, headings, main idea and details, etc. I use these materials with my at-risk students, and they find them highly-engaging and just challenging enough.
This is a great alternative to choosing between giving lower-level students material that is too hard to read but is aligned to 3rd grade standards or material they can read that is not aligned to 3rd grade standards and feels too young for the student.
The packet includes a three-page nonfiction article about the growth of solar energy in Africa, a comprehension worksheet, a main idea and detail worksheet, and Big-time Words (an elmo-ready image that highlights some of the more challenging words in the article that can be shown prior to reading the article).
I am very passionate about getting rich, engaging content to these young readers at such an important time in their development.
