What is it?
This pack was created when I was hunting for a mentor text that provided plenty of evidence for students to identify for the practice of this character trait. I wanted a book to use in a Read Aloud that was enjoyable for my students, gave me at least three solid examples to demonstrate for my students, and the flexibility to use this text in other ways throughout the school year.
After I found this text, in an effort to make things easier on myself (so I didn't have to reinvent the wheel every Fall), I typed up all the possible evidence of the character trait so it could be printed for our sorting as a class. I still draw the symbols on Post-It Notes in front of my students, but having these evidence cards ready for myself each year helps me to remember my goals for instruction.
How to use it?
In this pack are resources to be used for five days of instruction on this character trait using the Gradual Release Structure. There is the ability to add two more days for opinion writing, but only when students are ready to take the next step in their work.
If you are following the Gradual Release with this as your first mentor text to teach this character trait, you will want to perform a Think Aloud. If this is the second mentor text being used for the same character trait, then a Think Together would be more appropriate.
This can also be used in small group instruction, especially if you have multiple copies of this publication.
Why are we doing this in the classroom?
This fits the CCSS area of citing evidence from the text, and provides students with the opportunity to practice their Analysis and Sythesizing while they read.
The Writing component of this pack:
I included this part in the product and the structure of how I set this up, but only use this if your students have seen you model the process at least twice. I would recommend you first perform the writing in Guided Practice at your teacher table.
My personal organization regarding this product:
I usually used two mentor texts for one character trait and pull it into my guided reading groups afterwards.
Thanks for looking at this product!
