This test is the first in a series of ten tests, with completed study guides, that cover Georgia's 5th Grade Social Studies standards. The test includes a variety of question types covering the Bill of Rights, responsibilities of citizens and due process. I have used this test along with other tests in this series very successfully. I currently teach at a Title I school and still had nearly 70% of my students exceed state standards in 2014. Obviously there is far more to my students' success than just a test, but I know that if students can show mastery of the material on these tests, they have a firm understanding of Georgia's 5th grade social studies standards. This test can be used by teachers in other states, but it is designed specifically to measure mastery of Georgia's social studies standards.
This test covers the 5th grade Georgia Standards below:
SS5SCG1 The student will explain how a citizen’s rights are protected under the U.S. Constitution.
A. Explain the responsibilities of a citizen.
B. Explain the freedoms granted and rights protected by the Bill of Rights.
C. Explain the concept of due process of law and describe how the U.S. Constitution protects a citizen’s rights by due process.
In the past I had my students complete a study guide. I realized that my struggling students who needed the most help, were simply not studying. I created a completed study guide for each unit just to see how it would impact student performance. The results were phenomenal. Parents loved the completed study guides, because they now knew exactly what they needed to study with their child. Kids performed higher, because even my very unorganized students now had a full set of notes to study from.
The study guide is also fantastic for new teachers or teachers new to this content, because it provides a summary of what should be taught in regards to each standard. The study guide is not meant to be exhaustive. It provides a brief overview of what should be covered with each standard. This guide is also a great resource for test preparation at the end of the year.
