By pairing an engaging 43-minute video with a rich question/answer activity, students will have a meaningful class experience – even on a sub day. This lesson features a viewing of Billions in Change, a high-quality documentary readily available for streaming at multiple online sources, and critical thinking questions that focus on 5-Hour Energy founder Manoj Bhargava and his pledge to use 99 percent of his $4 billion empire to help solve the global problems of energy, fresh water, and disease prevention.

This 4-page PDF includes step-by-step instructions for a sub to follow, links to the free video content, and a question handout for students that includes direct recall of information to fill out during the viewing as well as deeper-thinking questions that require synthesis of information and reflection on personal connections for them to complete after viewing the film. A two-page answer key for easy grading or guiding of a classroom discussion is also included.

These materials work great as a last-minute sub plan or stand-alone lesson in between major units, but they are also a solid supplement for any unit dealing with issues of health, the environment, wealth/economic classes, politics, and/or social justice. I use this in my English classroom, but it’s also appropriate for science and business courses.

Students can participate in a full-class viewing or watch at their own speed on 1:1 devices or in your school’s computer lab.
