This is a great activity to use to make sure students can identify the GENUS name and the SPECIES name in an organism's binomial nomenclature. It gets students up and moving around. They will love guessing the scientific names of animals. This lesson is not to see if students can identify the actual names...it's just a way to make sure students know the genus name is capitalized and the species name is lower case. As a challenge, I reward my students with stickers and/or candy if they can be the person with the most names properly matched.
Print off the handouts of Genus and Species names.
Tape them on the walls around the room.
Pass out a student response sheet to every student.
Have students walk around and try to determine the correct Genus and correct Species name that goes with every common name on their response sheet.
Students probably won’t know any of the answers. I use this activity as an introduction on “CLASSIFICATION” day to become familiar with names and to make sure all my students can recognize that the genus name is capitalized and the species name is not.
