Product Description

This INTERESTING and FUN NGSS middle school activity challenges students as park rangers to create solutions to various real problems facing Yellowstone's ecosystem and teaches them the importance of maintaining BIODIVERSITY. This ready-to-go three to four day lesson plan addresses the Next Generation Science Standard's Performance Expectation MS-LS2-5. Evaluate competing design solutions for maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services. This resource a fun, authentic lesson that will stimulate discussion and develop understanding about the importance of biodiversity as students are required to research their group’s problem, develop a solution to the problem, and design a poster to present to the class.

Lesson Overview. Students:

  • Discuss "biodiversity" and "national parks" as a class. What is the purpose?
  • Read and discuss one of six dilemma cards (included) that explains a problem Yellowstone is facing. Examples of dilemmas include bison catching diseases from local cows, the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone, native vs. nonnative lake fish, and limiting winter use
  • Research more about their problem using the website www.nps.gov/yell
  • Brainstorm 3 possible solutions
  • Choose and design a realistic solution to their problem (examples provided on the card for help)
  • Create and present a poster of their problem, background, and solution

This activity covers the following DCI: Biodiversity describes the variety of species found in Earth’s terrestrial and oceanic ecosystems. The completeness or integrity of an ecosystem’s biodiversity is often used as a measure of its health.
