Each student can choose a person he/she has studied for this coat of arms activity. The coat of arms can be designed any way you wish and can have any requirements you might like for your students’ work. You might like to have each student choose a person and create a coat of arms with that person’s accomplishments. Talk a little about how a coat of arms represents the person and sometimes has elements of the person’s character or accomplishments depicted with symbols and imagery.
The sample included shows the coat of arms of Darius the Great. Four of his accomplishments are depicted on the coat of arms in both symbol form and word form. This can be done however you might like in your class.
You might also want to have students create their own coats of arms. This would be a great first week of school activity so that you can see what is important to them (and start their interactive notebook in the process). Then later in the year when you have them create a coat of arms for a person from history, you can have them refer back to their own coats of arms that they made earlier in the year!
This would be fun for a book character activity as well!
