Here's a fun book project that will assess students' knowledge with character traits. After students read a biography of their choice, have them design a campaign poster for that person imagining they were running for the office of President or Vice-President. Students will need to think about the qualities and characteristics that would make this person a good leader. Besides listing adjectives that describe the person, they must back it up with facts from the book (textual evidence) with something the person did or said that shows the characteristic or quality. You can download and make copies of the first two pages to hand out to students. This includes directions for the book project, questions to think about and information to include when designing the campaign poster, a rubric to follow and use as guidelines, and examples of posters to use as models. The 3rd page is rubrics to copy when grading (3 on a page).
This is a perfect activity to complete right before elections or Presidents' Day. The completed projects make an awesome bulletin board.
