This short biography on Denmark Vesey focuses on his origins on the West Indian island of St. Thomas, his intent to plot a slave rebellion in South Carolina and subsequent capture during the early 1820s, and his inspiration to the abolitionist cause of the antebellum period in the United States.
The biography includes a series of questions based on the reading.
In using this in my own class room, students are encouraged to:
1. Number the paragraphs
2. Read the biography
3. Highlight answers in the reading
4. Use complete sentences.
The answer key demonstrates these steps.
