This is meant to be a culminating activity to a reading/writing unit in biography. The purpose of this specific product is to research information about a person of interest (famous person/person in history). I love to use the Who Was books for this. Product includes:
Before reading questions
Organized note taking graphic organizers for during and after reading
(childhood life, family life, accomplishments, important life events, fascinating facts, reasons why they are inspirational, life lessons-what did I learn?, and possible themes).
After reading questions
Students will then compile their notes together and organize them onto the biography informational text graphic organizers. I also included a checklist for the students to complete before moving onto a final copy.
Students can be as creative as they would like. I challenged my students to think of creative ways to introduce the "idea" or topic sentence, rather than just saying "Now you will learn about their childhood." I pushed them to create sentences like "You may not think this person's childhood is very important but this person had a very interesting childhood that molded them into the famous adult we still read about." I also encouraged my students to include more evidence and examples in their writing/paragraphs rather than just straight fact after fact.
