The objective of this unit is to give students a hands-on experience with historical biography. Students can flesh out the episodes of an historical figure’s life. It is a unit which can meet curricular requirements for Language Arts as well as History. Students get some experience in research as well as creative writing, and it can be used with the study of any period of history. Groups of students use cooperative learning to create a story board or movie script which reflects one episode in the life of an important person from history. The unit makes use of cooperative learning activities as well as whole class and individual exercises.
After viewing a biofilm on an historical figure you choose according to the criteria given, the students will brainstorm a plot outline of important episodes in that figure’s life. They then break into small groups to research the details and create story boards depicting each episode. In the end the whole class will have created a biographical collection of storyboard. There are suggestions for followup activities. Included in the packet are templates for research notes, plot outlines, and story boards for use to complete requirements. A rubric is used to keep the groups organized and for your grades.
