High school science students will explore classification and taxonomy at interactive activity stations. These investigations put your jarred specimens to good use, and students LOVE station days! You will set up four stations around the room, and students will examine specimens, cards, and diagrams in order to learn about taxonomy, evolution, phylogenetic trees, and classification firsthand. This purchase includes the packet that students will complete as they visit each station, taxonomy vocab cards, a short quiz, and an answer key.

Duration: Students will work in groups and spend about 12 minutes at each station. Make sure you are timing them, and let them know when it is time to switch stations. It will take the students 48 minutes to complete each station.
1) Microscopes (one for each member of a group)
2) Electrical outlets (set up your microscopes accordingly)
3) Slides of various organisms (tissues, body parts, cells etc.)
*Make sure the slides are labeled by species
1) Place a variety of arthropods on this table. These could be in the form of actual jarred specimens or photographs. Check your school’s storage closet to see which specimens are available!
*Arthropods include insects, arachnids, crustaceans, and myriapods.
1) Print out the taxonomy vocab cards on sturdy paper, and cut each card out. Shuffle each deck.
*If you have more than 4 individuals per group, I would recommend printing off multiple deck copies.
1) Place various chordate specimens on the table. These could be in the form of jarred specimens, feathers, furs, snake skins, stuffed animals and photographs. Check your school’s storage closet to see what you can find.
*Chordates include mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.
2) Print out the phylogenetic tree found in this packet, and place on the table.
NOTE: I allow students to use their cell phones for this activity, in order to research each organism’s classification. If you do not feel comfortable with this or if not all of your students have phones with Internet access, you can allow them to use laptops or iPads for research.
