Product Description

This two unit bundle covers the extensive 3-LS4 performance expectations! The first unit covers;

3-LS4-1 - Analyze and interpret data from fossils to provide evidence of the organisms and the environments in which they lived long ago.

The print and go packet gives students everything they need and more for this performance expectation. Explore the world of fossils with your students with several interactive, engaging lessons. Your students will love the hands on activities such as; making secret fossils in either clay or Play-doh before the class takes a guess as to what it is, making mold fossils out of bread and Swedish fish and comparing maps of T. rex fossils and ancient environments. Unit also includes two interesting informational text passages with comprehension questions.

Fossil Unit Includes:

• An introduction to fossils with a KWL chart

• A lesson on body and trace fossils.

• A lesson on how fossils are formed.

• Making mold fossil activity - Students model the process of fossil formation!

• Students will use their imagination to create a cartoon strip of fossil formation.

• Reading passage and comprehension questions - Fossils Made From Amber

• Fossil age - Students will analyze a colorful chart to determine both the oldest and
youngest fossils.

• Lesson on identifying environments where fossils are found and how they change
over time.

• Reading Passage and comprehension questions - Nice to Meet You, Sue!

• Mapping activity - Students compare a map of an ancient environment that is now
the United States with a map plotting Tyrannosaurus rex fossils to identify evidence
of ideal fossil formation conditions. Students also predict where in the U.S. more T.
rex
fossil may be found using the evidence collected.

• Biological evolution! Students compare skeletons of T rex and chickens before
constructing an argument based on their findings as to whether the two species
could be related or not.

• A fun activity creating fossils out of clay using everyday objects. Students will
secretly create their fossils and then share with other groups to see if they can
guess what the fossil is. Students will use a data chart to record their guesses.

• Fun time! Create your own fossil word search. Students will love creating their own
word search and exchanging with a classmate to complete.

• Formative assessment. Students will take a multiple choice assessment at the end
of the chapter.

• Eye catching fossil unit poster set.

The second unit, Natural Selection and Adaptation is a highly engaging and interactive NGSS aligned unit covering the following NGSS performance expectations;

3-LS4-2 - Use evidence to construct an explanation for how the variations in characteristics among individuals of the same species may provide advantages in surviving, finding mates, and reproducing.

3-LS4-3 - Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular habitat some organisms can survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot survive at all.

3-LS4-4 - Make a claim about the merit of a solution to a problem caused when the environment changes and the types of plants and animals that live there may change.

Students will enjoy the interesting reading passages that are given as a central theme to each lesson. Reading comprehension questions are aligned with ELA standards. Also included are several fun, engaging activities that students will enjoy while gaining a deeper understanding of the content. Students sharpen their math skills by graphing data and analyzing results. Students also use their creative side in several activities as they imagine solutions or create and draw their own ideas.

Natural Selection and Adaptation Unit Includes:

• Natural selection introduction activity

• Trait lesson and activity

• Create a creature with traits that suit the environment that the student chooses

• Peppered Moths reading passage, comprehension questions and graphing activity

• Adaptations lesson page and activity

• Woolly Mammoth reading passage, comprehension questions and solution
activity

• Adaptations sorting activity

• Mimicry web quest

• Darwin’s Finches reading passage and comprehension questions

• Beak activity lab

• Plant Adaptations reading questions and comprehension questions

• Petrified National Forest picture observation activity

• Formative assessment. Students will take a multiple choice assessment at the end
of the chapter.

• Make your own word search

• Eye catching classroom poster set

• Teacher pages and answer key

In addition to NGSS alignment, this product is aligned to the following ELA and Math Common Core standards:

Common Core Math Alignment -

Common Core ELA Alignment -

Key Ideas and Details:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.1 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect. Craft and Structure:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas:

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.3.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).
