This activity includes 60 flashcards relevant to a chapter or unit studying biological macromolecules (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids). Through use of this activity, students are asked to distribute each of the cards into the four categories of macromolecule. This helps students identify molecule structures, the basic properties, and different types of the four important macromolecules in biology.
The cards are numbered so that each of the categories can be checked quickly. For example, odd numbers 1-29 all fit into one category of macromolecule. The evens 1-30, odds 31-60, and even 32-60 fit into the other three categories. This way it is quick and easy to check students' work, and the students do not know the pattern. This activity works best on a large desk, with students working as partners to help categorize the flashcards. In my experience, this activity has helped to improve students' ability to identify the basic properties and molecule structures of macromolecules, and has improved test scores and levels of understanding dramatically.
