Ecological succession, lichens, pioneer species, and primary/secondary succession are important topics in biology. This activity is designed to have students analyze and learn factors responsible for changes in biological succession.
Activity: Create a 3D pyramid on biological succession. Watch a 3 minute video on lichens. Complete three questions on biological succession.
Extend the learning: Ask students to explain the different species that reboot an ecosystem following a major disruption. Ask students to refer to the diagram in their ecological succession pyramid. Explain what happens over time. Ask where primary succession would start on the diagram [I] vs. secondary succession [III-VII]. Justify responses.
