If you are anything like me, you love to get your students up and moving in your class. So why not start the new school year off by setting this tone from the get go?
This Biology Bonanza is a stations activity that I designed to be used during the first week of school. During the Biology Bonanza, students will collaborate with their groups at each station through an activity and then discuss icebreaker questions as a way to get to know their classmates. Each station was created to engage learners and get them excited to explore more biology concepts during the school year.
What's Included in the Biology Bonanza?
-6 Stations Cards
-Activities for each Station
-Student Handout with Icebreaker Questions
What are the 6 Stations in the Biology Bonanza?
1. Station 1: Hidden in Plain Sight
-Students will look closely at 7 different pictures to try and find the
organism that is hidden in plain sight. They will then discuss with their
group why they think these organisms blend in so well.
2. Station 2: Engulfed
-Students will scan a QR code to watch a short video of a white blood cell
chasing and engulfing a bacterial cell. They will then discuss with their
group their thoughts and make connections to the immune system.
3. Station 3: Name that Scientist!
-Students will participate in a QR code card challenge in which they must
use clues to name the scientist. I encourage students to research the
scientists if they get stuck. This is such a fun way for them to be exposed
to a few of the scientists they will encounter during the school year.
4. Station 4: What is Biology Anyway?
-Students will research the field of Biology and work together to create a
summary statement that describes this field of science. Then, using their
acquired knowledge, they will use their creativity to illustrate the word
BIOLOGY to reflect their summary statement.
5. Station 5: Is this for REAL?
-Students will read through 16 biology statement cards and discuss each
with their group mates. They must decide which are true and which are
false. Once they have sorted the cards according to what they think,
they will scan a QR code to reveal the correct answers. Lastly, they will
evaluate their thinking based on how well they were able to identify the
6. Station 6: Do Strawberries have DNA?
-At this station, students will easily extract the DNA from a strawberry.
This is such an easy lab to set up and complete, and it will be sure to get
your students excited.
The Biology Bonanza is a great way to start off the school year and is a sure way to get your students excited for a fun year in Biology.
