This resource focuses on the biological concepts
of diffusion, osmosis and ecology especially the interaction of organisms in the cycling of nutrients in an ecosystem.
This package is designed as a one page activity at the beginning, a two page graphing activity in the middle and a single page reading comprehension at the end. The three activities can be rearranged in any way you prefer and can stand alone and apart from each other, but I use the three together with my 9th and 10th grade biology students.
ACTIVITY 1 - FISH TANK BIOLOGY:STUDYING ECOSYSTEMS
An introduction to the importance of studying living things in the classroom and at home. A review of ecological principals including interactions of biotic and abiotic factors, cycling of nutrients.
ACTIVITY 2 – GRAPHING DATA: THE EFFECT OF SALT ON DAPHNIA
An introduction to Daphnia sp. as indicators of environmental conditions. A described laboratory activity with the data collected. Students analyze the data to determine percent mortality and then graph that data and answer questions based on the graph.
ACTIVITY 3 – SALT AND WATER BALANCE IN EXERCISING HUMANS
A description of hyponatremia, its cause and symptoms. Questions that encourage students to think about feedback and homeostasis as it relates to salt, blood, and osmosis.
