Product Description
In this engaging cellular respiration lab, students will burn small bits of food and use a calorimeter to determine the amount of energy contained in each food. Students love this lab, and teachers love that it requires the skills of problem solving, critical thinking, calculations, and drawing conclusions.

Suitable for biology students in grades 9 - 12.



The energy content of food can be determined by burning a sample of food in a device called a calorimeter. Heat energy released by combustion is absorbed by a container of water. By using calorimetry, students can determine the amount of energy contained in foods.

PURPOSE:
1. To construct a simple calorimeter and use it to measure the amount of heat energy contained in marshmallows, peanuts and Fritos.
2. To determine the energy content of the three foods.
3. To compare the energy content of marshmallows, peanuts and Fritos.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
Ring stand and ring, Soft drink can, Large rubber stopper, Large paper clip, Balance, 100 mL graduated cylinder, Matches, Thermometer, Glass Stirring Rod, Fireproof pad, marshmallows, peanuts, and Fritos.

All student handouts include: Title, Purpose, Introduction, Materials, Safety Precautions, Procedure, Analysis Questions, and Student Data Pages.
