Learning about plants can be boring and often hard to spice up the diagram of a leaf cross section. Let students do the learning through their own plant growth inquiry lab!
Students design and carry out a lab that allows them to practice and review the scientific method and lab writing process while also learning about plant growth and curricular connections to the Science 10 biology unit.
I suggest carrying the lab out over 2 weeks (depending on the plants your students choose to grow). I give students 1-2 full class periods of work on their lab. Data collection is done on their own time and the write up component can be done during work block time or as homework. We continue to learn about cells, microscopes and plants while this lab is taking place!
The lab is designed in 4 parts to allow for teacher feedback opportunity and chunking of material. I provide students opportunity to hand in each part of their lab ahead of time for formative feedback, which helps set them up for success for future lab write ups.
Teacher rubric is included!
