What will the students be doing?
In this hands-on activity, students will simulate the biomagnification of a chemical (mercury or DDT) throughout a marine ecosystem. Students will then determine which organisms are most affected by the chemical. After this simulation, students will be able to define and explain biomagnification.
This is a fun activity to do with your students. Students will be working in pairs and using different sizes of cups to simulate organisms in a food chain. Students will be using candy such as skittles to simulate contaminated phytoplankton that is consumed by the primary consumers. After doing the simulation students will answer analysis questions and draw a food chain.
