Product Description
Objective:
Choose Your Corner is an engaging formative assessment strategy used to evaluate a student’s ability to distinguish between attributes of 3 to 5 different categories. In this particular Choose Your Corner lesson, students are given a card with a description or image of a biomolecule. Based on that information, the must student then must decide which corner of the room (carbohydrates, protein, lipid, nucleic acid) they belong in or if they belong in the middle. Once in the correct location, students discuss their description using the sentence stems provided and check each other to make sure everyone is in the correct corner. This is a great activity for English Language Learners because they are required to not only read but also to speak and listen using academic vocabulary.

Below are detailed instructions on how to complete this activity.

Materials/Prep:
- 1 laminated set of attribute cards
- 1 laminated set of the 4 “corner” signs
- Hang corner signs in the 4 corners of the room.
- Write the following two sentence stems on the board:
“I belong ONLY in the _______ corner because…”
“I belong in the middle of the room because…”

Procedure:
- Distribute one card to each student
- Students read their card and decide if they belong in a corner or if they belong in the middle. Note… The middle is for students who have cards that represent all biomolecules.
- Students move to the correct location in the room.
- Students in each group must find a partner and pair up. They will use the sentience stem written on the board to verbally discuss their card.

Other notes:
- There are 2 different levels of cards included in this activity. You can use one set or the other, combine the two sets, or pick and choose the cards you like best.
- The activity can be repeated several times so that students are exposed to various cards and corners.
- This activity can be used at the beginning of class as a review or at the end as a check for understanding.
- Sentence stems can be written on the board to help ELL students share and discuss while at their corner.
- I left a few blank cards in the level 1 set in case you would like to make some attribute cards of your own.
