Looking for a way to jazz up your biomolecules unit? Look no further! This hilarious activity will have the students create their own mad-lib adventure book about three characters - Carby, Lipido, and Proteina. Throughout the story, all three of these biomolecule samples meet a rather unpleasant fate. Whether digested into monosaccharides, burned for fuel, or denatured by a frying pan, these biomolecules don't have happy endings.
This story is both quirky and hilarious, due to words that students add themselves. At the end of this document is a "creative page" which prompts students for words and phrases. Students will actually fill this page out prior to seeing the story itself. Then, they fill in the story with their random and odd words and phrases. This gives each story a personalized touch.
This file comes with the story book (which can be cut & printed front/back), the creative page, and a page of easy teacher instructions. Having the students cut and staple their own books and fill them in will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
In my own classroom, I've used this activity with great success. Students enjoy sharing their weird responses with each other and their friends. Many of them take their stories home so that they can show their parents (I like to joke, "go read this to your younger siblings!). Students are also highly amused by the cartoon biomolecules characters and their unfortunate fates, which aids in memorizing the real molecules these characters are based on.
