Product Description

I use this activity in my biotechnology class to reinforce and illustrate the process of DNA Sequencing.

Before completing this activity I first have students watch the Khan Academy Video on Sequencing.

Students first watch a "click-through" animation that guides them through the overall process of Sanger Sequencing. The animation is accompanied by fill-in-the-blank questions and higher-level analysis questions.

Students then go to a virtual lab which goes through the process of performing and analyzing Sanger Sequencing . Again there are basic fill-in-the-blank questions and critical thinking questions.

Lastly, students learn about The Human Genome Project and Next-Generation Sequencing with this website and video. Questions ask students to compare modern sequencing to practices used during the Human Genome Project.


2 page student worksheet with links to online animations/virtual labs and 17 follow-up questions.

Answers to questions come directly from resources except for #17 which requires some external research to look up the cost of Sanger Sequencing vs. Next Generation Sequencing
