This design challenge helps younger students to understand how animals use their external parts to help them survive, grow and meet their needs. Students will examine four different types of bird beaks (drill, nut crackers, straw and scissor) and then design a beak that can hold a specific type of food using only certain materials.
The design brief is easy to follow and includes criteria, constraints, literary resources as well as a list of student and teacher materials needed. This challenge follows the design loop (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Develop, Improve) and can be broken up into several time periods for young learners.
It satisfies several domains in the Next Generation Science Standards. Please leave a comment with any additional questions!
