This is a science activity to use with your students when studying birds and feathers. Your students will hypothesize and then investigate why birds preen. Your students will love this hands-on investigation!
Materials per group: 2 feather shapes cut out of brown paper bags
1 small cup of water
1 small cup of vegetable oil
1 eye dropper
1 paint brush
Activity: After learning about preening (use vocabulary cards and
books on birds), have students hypothesize why birds preen their
feathers. Have students drop water on paper bag feather and see it absorb. Then have students paint the other feather with oil before dropping water onto it. Discuss and record observations.
