Color a bird, attach the paper to a pencil or straw, and spin. You'll see the bird in the cage - it's an easy illusion that students will love.
I think of this as simple science. It requires very basic materials (paper, crayons, tape, a pencil or straw), takes just a few minutes, and can easily be extended if students want to draw their own illusions. A page with lines makes this easy to do!
I've included a video
that shows you how to make the illusion and two videos
of the illusion as it spins - one close to the camera and one farther away. Does the distance make a difference in how well the illusion works? Does it matter if you color it with bright or dark colors? What if you spin it slowly or quickly?
Here are the spinning illusions in my store: Bird in a Cage FREEBIE
, a Dog in front of a Dog House
, a Butterfly resting on a Flower
, and a Fish in a Fish Bowl
. I've even created a BUNDLE
with four different choices to save you 50%
