Illustration Page for Bird House
2 Levels of Writing Paper: Primary and Intermediate
Instructions/Lesson Plan Ideas
Make persuasive writing come to life with this exciting writing project. I start this lesson by reading the book If I Built a House by Chris Van Dusen. After reading I ask the students to give “reasons” for why the house in the story would be great to live in. I explain that when they give reasons they are “persuading” me to live there.
Next, students draw a “birdhouse” they think a bird would love to live in. I let my students be as creative as they want. They get pretty inventive. They illustrate their birdhouse in the box on Page 1.
After the illustration is complete, students write a persuasive paragraph trying to convince a bird to live in this house. I always give some idea web time to help organize their thoughts as well.
I have integrated this lesson into my Inventor Unit. During this unit I also use the book If I Built a Car by Chris Van Dusen. Both of these stories are wonderful… great illustrations! You could use this lesson as a stand alone mini lesson on Persuasive Writing or incorporate it into your our unit! Happy writing!
Looks great on a bulletin board with the title "Home Tweet Home"!
