A while back I came across a really cute and practical way to post students’ birthdays. I don’t even remember where I saw it. I went through my stash of birthday gift bags and pulled out the ones that went with my room décor. I also went through my stash of tissue paper and pulled out one piece to go with each bag. If you don’t have enough bags in your stash, stop by a dollar store. Sometimes they even have value packs of 2 or 3 for a dollar.
To make them, I print out labels with the months on them, laminate them, and attach them to the front of each bag. I had to cut some of the labels down a little bit since my bags weren’t all exactly the same size. Once I have a class list and a list of their birthdays, I type their name and birthdate onto a tag. Since I have morning and afternoon kindergarten classes, I print them out on one color of paper for the AM class and a different color for the PM class. This little trick helps keep me sane. Then I stick them along the side of the correct birthday month bag in order by date. I have bulletin board space above my whiteboard and bulletin board, so I line up the birthday bags along the top. It’s a great location for students to look at birthday dates, but they can’t look in the bags themselves and get an early peek.
I put all the birthday goodies like birthday cards, pencils, and crowns in the bag too. That way I’m not running around the day of a student’s birthday trying to get all their birthday gifts together. It’s all ready to go whenever the special day arrives.
When I start the month, that birthday bag goes on my calendar math bulletin board. The tags on the bag get transferred to the class calendar. We can then count how many days until someone’s birthday during our calendar math time. Once the birthday has passed, we stick the tag back on the birthday bag. When the month is over, we put the birthday bag back on the wall and exchange it for the next month.
It is really easy to manage and is a huge timesaver. Plus it looks super cute and its one of the first things people notice when they visit. So if you are looking for a different way to post birthdays in your room, you might want to try this. It’s cheap, easy and super cute!
