I don’t know about you, but I love birthdays!
In my class, when a student has a birthday (or half-birthday for those summer babies) we spend our writing time writing a friendly letter to the special student. We begin by asking the birthday student a couple of questions about themselves- favorite color, cake/ice cream flavor, etc. Then, each student writes a personalized letter to them.
In the primary grades, we start this activity by doing shared writing. As they become more comfortable and their skills more refined, students are able to complete their letters independently. I require students to do a quick peer-conference before coloring, drawing a picture on the back, and handing their letter to the birthday student. While the class writes their letters, the birthday student colors the cover page. After everyone is finished writing, coloring, and drawing, I collect the letters and staple the cover page to the front. I always write the birthday student a special letter, too.
I love this tradition and hope you and your students will, too!
