This Graphing Birthdays in Google Slides™ digital activity if a fun way to get your students to work collaboratively
on the same presentation to create a pictograph of birthday months, form questions and analyze data.
You will need to decide what the graphing key will represent. This presentation defaults to one birthday cake image equaling 1. If you choose to change the key, simply change the number that is editable. I have included a slide with instructions if you need to crop the birthday cake into fractional pieces. This will allow you to use this product over and over again!
Since the key is editable, this product is appropriate for a variety of learning levels.
You could even assign multiple presentations and have students work in small, differentiated groups. K/1 teachers might choose to display this presentation (in editing mode) to complete the graph together as a class.
Step One: Students will click and drag one of the birthday cakes and place it in the column that represents their birthday month. *Call on just a few at a time to do this if you are using it as a collaborative presentation. You can always stop and analyze the data together as a class. Students will see the changes in real time on their screen.*
Step Two: Once the graph has been created, assign each student a numbered slide that has Graphing Questions
at the top. They will type their name at the bottom of the slide where it says "Created by" and type 5 questions in the questions column of the table that can be solved from the the data on the birthday graph. A home icon at the bottom of the questions slide will take them back to the graph for reference.
Step Three: Assign each student a different slide that has questions created by another student. Have them add their name next to "Solved by" and answer the questions by typing their answers in the answers column of the table. Once finished, the question creator can then head back to their original slide and check the answers of the problem solver! Alternative:
Students could always make a copy of the presentation after everyone has added their questions. At this point the presentation will no longer be collaborative and students can work on their own presentation to solve ALL of the questions (there might be many repeated questions if you do choose to do it this way).
This digital product will work on Chromebooks, laptops, computers and iPads.
Keep the presentation in editing mode.
