Directions for a 45-minute writing lesson to teach the trait of voice. In this activity, students assume the role of a member of a fictitious family and react to a situation (a birthday) as that person would react. Students work in groups to brainstorm ideas then respond by writing a friendly letter from the family member. When the writing is shared, the trait of voice is clearly demonstrated. Students see how their writing reflects the family member's personality through their way of expressing their strong feelings about the situation. Through this activity, students increase their understanding of the writing trait of voice.
