With this purchase, you will receive a PowerPoint discussion guide (132 slides in all), a printable student journal (42 prompts), and the unit test. Students will practice point of view, cause and effect, summarizing, characterization, imagery, compare/contrast, sequence of events, setting, theme, figurative language, inference, and prediction! Easy to follow and NO PREP!!
The best part about the discussion guide is there is NO PRINTING involved. Save your copier allowance by simply displaying this on the screen and allowing students to take their own notes! This discussion guide has everything you need to teach the unit—NO PREP and no need to research for outside material. Each chapter will take around 40 minutes to complete, thus you receive at least 21 days of lesson plans!! My students used their interactive notebooks to take notes and record answers, but you can also do this on loose paper or create booklets for students if you are not a notebook user. This study is perfect for whole group OR small group instruction.
The student journal will come to you in PDF format. There are 2 journals included for each chapter. The Jump-Start Journal is intended for students to complete before they read the text. These journal entries allow students to compare/contrast the novel with their own lives. The connections they make will help students comprehend the chapter on a deeper level as well as recall the events more effectively. They will also allow students to make predictions about what is to come in the chapter. The second journal is the Sign-off Journal. Unlike the Jump-Start Journal, this second version is intended to be completed after students finish the chapter. These entries will allow students to reflect on the plot, characters, author purpose, etc. After finishing this packet, students will have written about Black Beauty 42 times! This will greatly improve their retention of the novel and their enjoyment of its themes.
Finally, the unit test has 34 questions included with multiple choice, matching, and short answer. Students are asked to recall characters, recognize quotes, answer basic comprehension questions, and identify figurative language. The answer key is also included at the end of this document.
By following this study, students practice a variety of reading skills including point of view, cause and effect, summarizing, characterization, imagery, compare/contrast, sequence of events, setting, theme, figurative language, inference, and prediction. This guide will introduce each concept to your students-no need to have practiced them already.
The novel version I used is from the "Classic Starts" series by Sterling Publishing. It is retold from the Anna Sewell original. You will see that all chapters are referred to by their numbers—no names. So you can easily adjust this unit to fit your version of the novel!
