Product Description
I love teaching Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Black Cat” but did you hear that “whooshing” sound? That was the irony and foreshadowing—the cornerstone of Poe’s macabre style—going right over my students’ heads.

I developed this lesson to point my students toward specific moments in the story that are dripping with irony and foreshadowing. The lesson gets specific: verbal irony, situational irony, dramatic irony, and foreshadowing. This story comes early in my curriculum and it is generally the first time my students are working with these terms, but I find it sets a solid foundation for the rest of the year.

This lesson takes one day of group work in class. Enjoy!
