Thematic Literacy Unit to celebrate black equality. The unit starts with slavery to paint the picture of life African-American’s had. The unit then goes through the fight for freedom, segregation, the fight for Civil Rights, and end by embracing the differences in all of us. This until is for grades K-2 but includes higher reading levels. The chosen literature includes: novels, history, biographies, autobiographies, picture books, poetry, songs, film, non-fiction, and folklores.
This document includes a matrix for read aloud and independent reading, bibliography, scope and sequence, a summary of each chosen book, and why the books were chosen.
