This a comprehensive literacy and language unit that focuses on using context clues to define new vocabulary words, comprehension strategies of successful readers, visualizing, summarizing, use of text evidence, and demonstrating understanding by answering comprehension questions. The unit requires the reading passage, Schools: Black and White from the Nonfiction Comprehension Cliffhangers book by Tom Conklin.
This is a great unit for intermediate and middle school students to teach and practice reading comprehension strategies. It is complete with graphic organizers, learning goals and scales, and an assessment with an answer key. NOTE: You will receive a BW version of the assessment for easy distribution to your students.
The slides display nicely on interactive whiteboards during whole group instruction, tablets during small group, teletherapy platforms, or they could be printed for use in literacy and/or history centers.
